Menopause Boosts Heart Disease Risk
According to a new study, as women begin to enter menopause, their risk of developing a collection of heart disease risk factors appears to increase.
Researchers found that among 949 US women who were studied for nearly a decade the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of risk factors for heart disease, stoke and diabetes including high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high triglycerides, increased during perimenopause – the years during which a woman's body begins to transition into menopause that usually starts in her 40s.
The new findings are published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. They indicate that maintaining a healthy lifestyle may be especially critical during perimenopausal stage.
